The fashion industry is one that’s often portrayed as glamorous, fun and exciting. But unless you’re one of them who sees what goes on behind the scenes, you must know that for such gorgeous and beautiful clothing pieces to be created, a lot of hard work and effort is put in. A single piece can take a lot of time, what’s more a whole line of fashion. It all begins with the initial sketches, so if you’re planning on sketching fashion designs, make sure you’ve got the right art supplies.
The most basic supplies required would be your trusty sketch pad and a few felt tip pens or some sharpies. You would also need a trace pad and some pencils for the starting sketches. Then you move on to the more fancy stuff such as pattern masters, curves, set squares and French rulers, all with detailed markings for you to get measurements and details right on your sketches. Things like the garder ruler is also important in the fashion scales because it would be used to measure the curves for armholes, collars and so on.
You would also need some good quality charcoal sticks for you to draw out your thoughts and some colour pastels as well. A great type of pencils to use would be those that are non water soluble as they don’t smudge and are quick to use. Also, when investing in pens and markers, get those that dry instantly so you can pen out your ideas quickly and without having to wait for the ink to dry and so on.
Once you’ve got your pictures and colour schemes all ready, you would need to add in the colours in detail. You can use the colours from sharpie markers for fashion sketches but for more details, try using water colours.
